A woman is dead and four men hospitalised following a motor vehicle crash on the Newlands main road in Portmore, St. Catherine Wednesday morning.

She has been identified as Karel Lewis of Newlands.

Residents said the crash occurred about 8:30 near the entrance to West Cumberland.

It is reported that the five people were travelling in a Toyota Harrier and had just left a nearby supermarket when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle.

Alleged eyewitness Dwight Tingling said he heard skidding sounds, after which the vehicle flipped multiple times.

Ms Lewis was thrown from the vehicle.

The Road Safety Unit has said excessive speeding was the main cause of the crash.

Kenute Hare, Director of the Unit, said the passengers in the vehicle were also not wearing seatbelts.

He pleaded for motorists to comply with the road code and wear their seatbelts at all times.
