Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says work on the new six-storey building at Spanish Town Hospital should begin shortly.

Dr. Tufton says several old buildings are being demolished, explaining that services previously provided in those spaces have been relocated to new facilitiies.

"Those buildings represented the pharmacy and the lab which is now here as new buildings and we just opened a new waiting area. So once that demolition is complete within a week or two, they're going to start digging a foundation. Once that foundation is there then the construction starts."

Dr. Tufton said the work should be completed in 18 to 24 months.

"It's seven floors - one underground, underground parking and so on, and then six above ground - and it's going to mean a lot of good things for Spanish Town, more operating theatres, more ward space, new A&E and so on," he outlined.

The minister was speaking to Radio Jamaica News following the official opening of the new outpatient waiting area at the hospital on Wednesday.
