Wray and Nephew row to be referred to the IDT

The row concerning a redundancy exercise at Wray and Nephew Limited is likely to be referred to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT).

On Tuesday the National Workers Union (NWU) requested that the Tribunal hear the dispute.

The request was made during a meeting at the Labour Ministry.

NWU Vice President Granville Valentine said the union will be insisting that a thorough review be carried out into the circumstances which led to the staff cuts at the rum manufacturing company.

"We have asked the Ministry of Labour to refer the matter to the Tribunal. We believe that at the Tribunal we will be able to have the matter property sorted out. It is not very important that we do so in the interest of all,"

"If this matter is not resolved in the way that it should be then management thereafter will be able to dismiss workers on the spot without following any due process as it relates to redundancy," said Mr. Valentine.

Workers who were laid off from the Engineering Department last week have been demonstrating in front of the company's offices on Spanish Town Road in Kingston since Monday.

They accuse the company of being heartless in letting them go a week before Christmas.

They also feel the profits the company made over the years should have been enough to cushion the effects of the global financial crisis and spare their jobs.
