RJR News understands
that workers at Wray and Nephew Jamaica Limited have been picketting the
company since early Monday morning.
It is reported that several workers took up positions outside the gates of the liquor company bearing placards.
Last Thursday, operations at the company were disrupted by disgruntled staff reacting to surprise redundancies in the Engineering Department.
In a release, Wray and Nephew explained that it is feeling the tremors of the global economic crisis and the company had to make some workers redundant in an effort to cut operational costs.
It also stated that the company had to put itself in a position to survive whatever shocks the future may hold and be ready to benefit from any recovery whenever that may take place.
A meeting with the National Workers' Union which represents the workers was unsuccessful.
The union demanded that management also look at trimming the fat at the top levels of the company, by cutting managerial staff.
It is not yet clear why the workers are protesting, just one day ahead of a scheduled meeting between Management and union.
