Belize police officers say they are investigating the weekend landing of a plane in the remote part of the Toledo District, the country's southernmost district and home to nearly 1,700 square miles of rainforest, mountains, rivers, and offshore islands, after the charred remains of an aircraft were found.
Media reports said the plane, believed to be engaged in illegal drug trafficking, landed on a makeshift runway and was set on fire after its cargo was unloaded.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, said last Sunday, police and members of the Belize Defence Force conducted an operation in the Toledo District after reports were received of a low-flying aircraft.
They made checks in the area of Dolores Village, where three miles from the village they discovered a burnt-up aircraft, a jet. It was completely burnt, and no cargo was found.
