Food for the Poor Haiti appeals for continued support

One Non Governmental Organisation in Haiti is appealing for continued focus on the country's plight.

The appeal comes nearly a year after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed more than 250,000 people and disrupted life in Haiti.

In the aftermath of the quake, there were outpourings of sympathy and pledges of monetary support however; 12 months later many of the commitments have not come to fruition.

Among the agencies that rallied to the earthquake ravaged country's assistance was the international donor agency, Food for the Poor.

But the continued fall off in help has prompted the agency to appeal for the focus to be maintained.

In an interview with an RJR News team which visited the country recently, Karen Dolce, Executive Director of Food for the Poor Haiti, appealed to foreign agencies not to forget the impoverished country.

"I think that Haiti is a country that has suffered a lot. I know that there are catastrophes all over the world but Haiti has been really badly hurt by the earthquake, by the cholera and by the flooding and we still we need from the world, so please keep the focus on Haiti … don’t forget us," she said.

Food for the Poor has built 800 houses for Haitians since the earthquake, a 200% increase over the year before.

The Agency has also started a feeding programme, which caters to over 10,000 people per day.

The Agency has been in Haiti for over 25 years.

The medical charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres has said many Haitians are still enduring appalling living conditions, a year after the earthquake.
