A senior member of the ruling United Workers Party (UWP)
in St. Lucia
has been charged for maiming his girlfriend.
Anthony Walcott, the UWP Treasurer and former Senator, was charged as a result of the alleged incident arising from a domestic dispute.
He has been released on EC$3,000 bail and is to return to court on March 19.
The victim, 23, has been reportedly paralysed from the waist down following a violent incident at Walcott's South Castries residence, where the couple lived.
The woman is now receiving treatment in Martinique.
Since the alleged incident, various individuals and organisations led by the local branch of the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action have been speaking out in the media against domestic violence.
