More cuts looming AA flights to the region

American Airlines has announced that it will make dramatic cuts in flights to the Caribbean rather than raise ticket prices too high.

The cuts are set for September.

The airline, a dominant force in Caribbean air transport, has been grappling with record-high fuel prices.

Spokeswoman Minnette Velez said American Airlines decided to cut flights and reduce capacity rather than raise ticket prices so high that they are beyond the reach of most customers.

Some analysts said fares will inevitably rise as fewer seats will be available.

Puerto Rico will also be feeling the pinch when the carrier cuts its flights to the Caribbean.

An official said this is the result of Puerto Rico being the Airline's hub, which also serves the Caribbean region.
