Five time American 800 metre champion Alysia Montano is almost 8 months pregnant, but competed at the U.S National Championship Thursday night.
Montano had discussed the risks with her doctors who supported her choice to run.
Understandably, the 2-time World Championship 4th place finisher didn't have lofty goals going into the race.
“I have been running during my entire pregnancy and I have felt really, really good during the whole process," Montano said. "So I definitely thought I could run a pretty decent time, I didn’t have a time on it, just knew that I didn’t want to get lapped, or be the first person to ever get lapped in an 800”, she said with a chuckle.
“But more than anything I wanted to be here," Montano added. "And I am feeling that fire and that desire to be here and be on the track and to race, and what a better avenue than to do it at the USA Nationals”, Montano said.
“I have a qualifying time and I just felt like I had to be here," Montano added.
Montano finished some 35 seconds slower than her personal best, and she did manage to avoid being lapped.
