Another fruitful day for Jamaican athletes in Rio

All six Jamaicans including seven time Olympic champion Usain Bolt made progress to the semi-final round of their respective events in the morning session of track and field action at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil on Tuesday.            

Bolt was effortless as he won his heat of the men's 200 meters to advance to the semi-finals, clocking 20.29, the 15th fastest time overall.

Compatriots Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade also made progress to the semi-finals, blake clocking 20.13 seconds to win his heat while Ashmeade posted 20.15.

Canadian sensation Andre DeGrasse was the fastest qualifier overall, clocking 20.09 seconds while Americans Justin Gatlin  20.42 and Lashawn Merritt 20.15 seconds, also won their heats.  

National champion Megan Simmonds 12.81, Nickiesha Wilson with a season's best 12.89 and shermaine williams 12.91, all made progress to the semi-finals of the women's 100 metre hurdles.

World leader Omar Mcleod, Andrew Riley and Deuce Carter are just about now contesting the men's sprint hurdles semi-final starting at 6:45 pm. The final is scheduled for 8.40pm.

Ristanana Tracey, Janieve Russell and Leah Nugent will also line up in the semi-finals of the women's 400m hurdles at 7:10pm.

Top qualifier Annsert Whyte, Roxroy Cato and Jaheel Hyden will then contest the semi-finals of the men's 400 meter hurdles starting at 7:35 pm.

And at 8:00 pm, Elaine Thompson and Simone Facey will run in the semi-finals of the women's 200 meters.

Jamaica's medal tally stands at four, two gold, and  two bronze. On Wednesday's six day of track and field competition Kenia Sinclair, Natoya Goule and Semoya Campbell will start competing in the 800m heats, while kemoy campbell will go in the men's 5000m.
