2011 world 100 metre champion Yohan Blake says World Athletics president Sebastian Coe is killing athletics following the recent Diamond Leauge changes. World Athletics recently announced that it will be cutting 4 events: the 200m, the 3,000m steeplechase, the triple jump and discus throw from the events from the Diamond League calendar for the upcoming season.
This as it tries to tighten the broadcast and make the meets more exciting. But Blake has added his name to the list of athletes who have expressed disappointment in the new format. In an article published by the BBC, Blake said: "That's a stupid move, he must enhance the sport, but he is killing it."
There will now be 12 disciplines at each of the 15 meetings because athletics' governing body wishes to cut events for a "90-minute broadcast". The 2020 Diamond League begins in Doha on April. None of the four disciplines removed from the 'core' list will form part of the Diamond League final in Zurich in September.
