Calabar, Edwin Allen are Champs !

Calabar High School are back on familiar turf. They are boys' champion again.

Edwin Allen High School has delivered. They have reclaimed the girls' championship.

On a day when 13 records were established for a total of 20 for the Championships, Super Saturday  - the 5th and final day of Boys' & Girls' Championships - lived up to its billing in front of an eventual sold out National Stadium of 29,000.

Calabar dominated Super Saturday, starting the day on 105 points, one behind Jamaica College. But the defending champions' assault on the finals on Saturday proved too much for the opposition. Calabar had 36 athletes in the day's finals, 6 in the throws, 4 in the jumps, 10 in the sprints, 6 in the distance races, 5 in the hurdles and 5 in the relays, 8 more than any of the top contenders, with Kingston College having 28 runners in finals, St. Jago placing 23 and Jamaica College 19.

                                      Francis devastating

Perhaps the performance of the entire Championships came from Class-1 runner, Javon Francis in the boys' class-1 400 metre final. Francis attacked the track, and the clock from the off, blowing away Devaughn Baker (JC), Ivan Henry (ST. Jago), Nathon Allen (St. Jago), Marco Doodnaughtsingh (Kemps Hill), Twayne Crooks (Vere), Okeen Williams (STETHS) and Lennox Williams (Manchester) off the first stagger. He covered the field mid way that stagger and established a 3-metre lead down the backstretch, with Francis absolutely flying. There was no stopping the green and Black standard bearer, as he raced home in 45.00 secs, a new record, breaking the 11-year old mark set by the incomparable Usain Bolt of 45.35 secs.

Later in the afternoon, Francis would pull up injured in the class-1 200 metre final won by Jevaughn Minzie, as KC's newly minted class-1 100 metre king Zharnel Hughes withdrew because he felt a twinge in his hamstring after the 100 metre final Friday night.

Other impressive records came from Calabar's Tyreke Wilson whose 21.72 secs erased Jevaughn Matherson's one year old mark of 21.85 in class-3 over 200 metres;  Christophe Bryan cleared 2.23 metres to set a new record in the boys' class-1 high jump;  Devon Spencer of STETHS heaved the Javelin 64.08 metres for a new standard, erasing the old mark of 59.66 metres; Rochelle Frazer of Edwin Allen threw the girls' class-1 shot put 13.69 metres for a new record; and Calabar's class-1

4 x 100 metre relay team scorched 39.35 secs as 8 of the 11 relays saw new records being established.

Calabar retained their title to tick off win number 24, totalling 305 points to finish way ahead of Kingston College 208.50. JC was third on 190, St. Jago 4th 158.50 and STETHS 5th on 123 points.

Edwin Allen outscored the field to win their 2nd Girls' Championship crown with 337.50 points. St. Jago was 2nd with 263 points; Hydel High 3rd 229 points; unseated champions Holmwood Technical 4th 211.50 and Vere 141.

Hydel's Ashanti Moore was the girls' class-4 champion; Hydel's Shiann Salmon the girls' class-3 champion; Manchester High's Annastacia Forrester the girls' class-2 champion; and Marleena Eubanks of Edwin Allen the girls' class-1 champion. Vere's Britnie Dixon the 800 and 1500 metre champion who was 3rd in the 5000 metres open was the overall girls' champion with 24 points, edging Holmwood's Shanieke Watson, 23 points.

Calabar's Dejour Russell won the class-3 boys' title; Cornwall's Warren Barrett Jr was the boys' class-2 champion; Calabar's Rajay Hamilton the boys' class-1 champion; and Calabar's Dejour Russell was the overall boys' champion with 23 points, 5 points clear of six other athletes, two of whom, Rajay Hamilton and Tyreke Wilson were Russell's teammates.
