California Chrome wins 140th Kentucky Derby

The 5-2 favourite California Chrome ridden by Victor Espinosa, won the 140th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville  on Saturday.

The chestnut colt was settled in third by Espinosa for most of the way, before quickening away in the homestraight to win by 1 3/4 lengths. His trainer Art Sherman at age 77, became the oldest trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. It was Espinosa's second Derby success following War Emblem in 2002.

The Kentucky Derby win stretched California Chrome's streak to five. He won in front of 164,906 people, the second largest crowd in the 140 year history of the Derby.

Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgemohan finished second aboard "Commanding Curve" at 37-1, while Rajiv Maragh was fourth astride 6-1 second choice "Wicked Strong."
