FIFA could be facing a request for the formation of a seventh confederation after an executive committee meeting of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in Antigua at the weekend agreed to explore the prospects for a breakaway of the 31 Caribbean nations from the 41-member CONCACAF confederation.
It is understood that if a vote were to be taken today it is likely that the Caribbean federations would vote to split from CONCACAF by as many as 24 votes to seven.
Howard McIntosh, former JFF Technical Committee chairman and also a former FIFA Development Officer had proposed the idea during a recent discussion with RJR Sports.
Outside of the financial benefits, he said the CFU region would be guaranteed at least one World Cup spot under such arrangement.
CFU president Gordon Derrick in raising the issue at their executive meeting, said he wanted discussion on the matter to weigh the pros and cons, how it would work, what it might look like and the legal process.
