After six World Cup qualifying cycles of using the hexagonal format, president of CONCACAF Victor Montaglianni says the format of World Cup qualifying could be adjusted with the six team final round being expanded. Since the 1998 qualifying campaign, the hexagonal round has been the system used to select the region's representatives for the “greatest show on earth”.

However, due to the adjustment to the FIFA match calendar, caused by spread of Covid-19, the CONCACAF president expects the six team round to be expanded. Montaglianni maintains that the rankings will be used to seed teams for the new qualifying cycle.

Montaglianni says the exact number of teams for the final round will not be known until FIFA reveals its revised international calendar. Once Jamaica, which is currently ranked fourth in the CONCACAF region  remains in the top six, they are guaranteed a place in the final round.
