Historic qualification! Jamaica to have representation in gymnastics in Rio

Jamaica is set to have its first representative in gymnastics at the Olympic Games with Toni-Ann Williams qualifying through an Olympic test event in Rio on Sunday.

She finished 38th overall in the test event with a 52.931 total in the all-around. Her best score was a 14.066 on vault, which ranked 24th.

She ended 29th in the beam with 13.666 and 32nd in the floor with 13.366 and earned an 11.833 on bars. The University of California sophomore is already the first gymnast to compete for Jamaica at the international level.

She is also the first UCAL women’s gymnastics student-athlete to qualify for the Olympics in the history of the programme.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's hopes to be represented in fencing at the Rio Olympics have been dashed after Tia Simms-Lyn and Alison Miller failed to advance in continental qualification competitions in San Jose, Costa Rica on the weekend.

The fencers had to win gold in order to make it to Rio but fell at an earlier stage.
