International chess grandmaster in JA

Celebrated international chess grandmaster, Ukrainian Georgy Timoshenko, is in Jamaica to work with local talent.

Timoshenko, who is in the country as a guest of the Jamaica Chess Federation, was part of a chess feast held at the Federation's headquarters in Kingston Thursday afternoon.

He staged a simultaneous exhibition, taking on 30 players, including top local players, all at once on different boards.

The event saw a large turn out with players ranging from eight to 20 years old.

RJR Sports spoke with Timoshenko during the session and he reflected on the challenge.

"Just now, it is hard as I’m talking to you but I hope that more people will come to love the game, that it will be more popular after this," he said.

Top local player Jomo Pitterson, who is an international master, said he will be working closely with Timoshenko while he is in Jamaica.

"We are lucky to have grandmaster Timoshenko with us. He is out here coaching me for a couple of tournaments that are coming up.  Jamaica is accepting chess and it is the fastest growing sport, so what we need to do now is produce more world class players. That is the aim," Pitterson said.
