Kimberly Williams, first finalist for Jamaica at World Indoor Champs

Triple jumper Kimberly Williams was the first Jamaican to qualify for the final of an event on the opening morning of the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships underway in Sopot, Poland.

Williams leapt 14.35 meters on her first attempt in the qualifying round to book her place in the women's triple jump final. In the other field event, featuring a Jamaican, on Thursday morning, Odayne Richards with a best effort of 19.77 meters failed to qualify for the final of the men's shot putt.

On the track, Kalises Spencer, with 52.26 seconds, and Patricia Hall, 52.19, both advanced to the semi-finals of the women's 400 meters. Edino Steele, with 46.38, and Akheem Gauntlett, 46.85, also made progress to the semi-finals of the men's equivalent.

Natoya Goule just missed out on qualifying for the final of the women’s 800 meters, after posting a personal best 2minutes:01.89 seconds for third in her heat.

Nesta Carter, team captain and defending silver medalist, and Kimmari Roach will line up in the heats of the men's men's 60 meter later on friday. Indira Spence and Monique Morgan will also contest the heats of the women's 60m hurdles. Damar Forbes will contest the qualifying rounds of the men's long jump.
