Former Jamaican sprint queen Merlene Ottey now running for Slovenia, is set to create history at the World Athletics Championships this month after being named in the Slovenian squad for Osaka, Japan.
At age 47, Ottey will become the oldest female competitor ever at the IAAF World Champiosnhips, surpassing Briton Joyce Smith, who competed in the inaugural world championships in 1983 at age 45.
Incidentally Ottey, who will be making her 8th appearance at the World Championships also took part in that first ever world champs when she finished 2nd in the 200 and 4th in the 100 meter for Jamaica.
Ottey has also collected a record 10 individual and four relay medals in World Championship competitions.
