Double sprint world record holder Usain Bolt says American Tyson Gay will not break the men's 100 metre world record this year and would need the push from himself or Asafa Powell to even come close to that time.
On Wednesday, Gay the second fastest man ever over 100 metres, said he did not need Bolt or Powell to break his personal best of 9.69 seconds at Friday’s 14th and final Diamond League Meet in Brussels, Belgium.
However, Bolt says Gay will need the extra push to break his 9.58 seconds world record set at the Berlin, Germany World Athletic Championships last year.
“Tyson is a great fighter, he works hard and he has done extremely well but I don’t think he’ll get a world record this year. I think he needs that extra push to break the record because 9.58 seconds is not easy to get and I had to push in that race with Gay and Powell to set that record,” Bolt said.
“I think he will need that extra push … you can’t push yourself to the limit that you want to. But I think he’s a great athlete, I wish him all the best and if he breaks it, it’s whatever, because my main aim is the world championship (in 2011),” he added.
Gay goes up against other J’cans
Even though Gay will not have a Bolt or Powell to contend with on Friday, he will still have a few Jamaicans to face including upcoming sprint sensation Yohan Blake, Nesta Carter and world junior champion Dexter Lee.
Four other Jamaicans are down to compete; Allodin Fothergill will line up in the men's 400 metres while Korene Hinds and Madrea Hyman will contest the women's 3,000 metre steeplechase.
National record holder Dorian Scott will line up in the men's shott putt.
The meet can be seen live on Television Jamaica starting at 1pm.
