Richard Austin is dead

The former Kensington, Jamaica and West Indies cricketer Richard ‘Danny Germs’ Austin is dead.

Austin, one of the most superlative sportsmen to have emerged from the region, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2015 in hospital at age of 60.

He played two test matches while his lone ODI match came on February 22, 1989 at the Antigua Recreation Ground. Austin played 38 first class matches for Jamaica, at an average of 33.82. He also took 73 wickets with a best of 8 for 71.

Austin will be remembered for his contributions to West Indies Cricket as a talented allrounder, a batsman who could bowl either medium pace or offspin. He was also an outstanding footballer and table tennis player.

He was a member of the "Rebel" West Indies team to South Africa, and also represented the Windies in the Kerry Packer series
