Serena now second on Grand Slam list in Open Era with 20 titles

American Serana Williams is playing herself into the record books.

She fought back gallantly on Saturday on the red clay court of Roland Garros in Paris, France, to win the women's singles title, and in the process, ticked off her 20th singles Grand Slam crown, only bettered by Steffi Graff with 22 in the Open Era.

The Open Era of Tennis began in April 1968, when players started competing for prize money. Before that, only amateurs were allowed to compete including in the established events without prize money, and they were only compensated for travel expenses. Margaret Court won 24 titles before the Open Era.

On Saturday we saw two Serenas. She won the first set 6-3 against Lucie Sarafova. Then Sarafova fought hard to win the second set 7-6 (7-2 tiebreak), then took a 2-0 lead in the final set. However, Serena hitched another gear and won the next six games and the match 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. It was a sublime performance over the last six games by Williams.

Williams also won the Australian Open title in January 2015, and is on course for the Grand Slam title, which is winning all majors in a calendar year. The Wimbledon and U.S. Open are next.
