Smith wins long jump title at NCAA Outdoor Championships

Jamaica's Ackelia Smith secured victory in the women's long jump on Thursday's second day of the 4-day NCAA Division One track and field championships in Austin, Texas. Smith, formerly of Edwin Allen and competing for the University of Texas, leapt 6.88 meters for victory.

She came into the championship with a season leading and personal best 7.02 meters

Meanwhile, teammate and another former Edwin Allen standout, Kevona Davis, sped to 11.02 to qualify for the final of the 100 metres .

Season leader, St Lucia's Julien Alfred also representing the University of Texas and formerly of St Catherine High, was the fastest qualifier with 10.99 seconds. Davis and Alfred both had the joint fastest qualifying time of 22.23 for the final of the 200 metres

Former Excelsior High star Ackera Nugent now representing the University of Arkansas, clocked the 2nd fastest time of 12.55 to qualify for the final of the women's 100 metre hurdles. 

Former Vere tech standout Nikiesha Pryce now competing for the University of Arkansas, clocked a personal best 50.31  win her semi-final and qualify for the final of the women's 400 metres

Teammate and gold medal favourite Britton Wilson was the fastest qualifier with a meet and facility record of 49.36 seconds. The finals will be contested on Saturday.
