Olympic and World Championship medallist Sherone Simpson says she is considering retirement after nearly two decades in the sport. The 35 year old who is one of the fastest Jamaican women of all time, has competed sparingly since the birth of her child in late 2016.
Simpson who is also a former Commonwealth and Pan American champion, says she's not eager on a return and is content with her achievements. “I have other priorities and I’m very satisfied with what I’ve achieved in track and field and if I do decide to hang up the spikes, I would be very comfortable and happy. I wish Jamaica all the best in Doha and beyond,” said Simpson.
Meanwhile, the former MVP and now Sprint Tech athlete says she's happy with the current state of track and field in Jamaica. There was cause for concern after the nation disappointed at the 2017 World Championships in London, but Simpson is confident there will be an improved showing in 2019 and beyond.
“I’m very hopeful especially on the female side. On the male side improvements are needed in the sprints but in the 400m we have a very good team so I think the future is in good hands. It’s up to the athletes to stay positive, humble and be grounded,” she said.
