Sunshine Girls crushed by Australia in World Netball Champs semis

Australia scored their highest total against Jamaica in head to head competition, as they defeated the Sunshine Girls 82 – 46 in Saturday's semi-final of the 13th IFNA (International Federation of Netball Associations) World Netball Championship at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Led by player of the match Natalie Medhurst, who scored 28 goals from 30 attempts, nine time and defending champions Australia took control from the opening whistle, despite Jamaica starting the twin tower of romelda Aiken as goal-attack and Jhaniele Fowler as goal shooter.

The plan backfired, as Australia led 18 – 13 after the first quarter, 37 – 23 at the half and opened up a 31 goal lead, 63 – 33, after three quarters, as the Australian Diamonds outscored Jamaica 26 – 9 in the third quarter.

The Sunshine Girls will now play England for the bronze medal at 1:30 a.m. Sunday Morning, July 10, as New Zealand beat England 49 – 34 in the other semi-final.

It means Australia play New Zealand in the championship decider at 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Both matches to be seen live on Television Jamaica.

In other matches on Saturday, Malawi beat Trinidad and Tobago 61 – 38 and South Africa beat Northern Ireland 46 – 41.

This sets up the fidth place match at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday between South Africa and Malawi, while at 9:00 p.m. Trinidad and Tobago will play Northern Ireland for seventh place.

In other play-off matches, Wales surprised Fiji 62 – 47 for ninth place, Barbados beat Samoa 68 – 45 for 11th position, Botswana beat Sri-Lanka 59 – 54 to finish in 13th place and host Singapore beat Malaysia 47 – 36 to finish at number 15 of 16 countries.
