Tributes pour in for Herb McKenley

Jamaica and the rest of the world continue to remember one of the most outstanding sportsmen, the Honourable Herbert "Herb" McKenley, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies on Monday.

McKenley, who won one gold and three silver medals in the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki in 1948 and 1952, was conferred with Jamaica's third highest honour, the Honour of Merit back in 2004.

After retiring from sports, the great Herb coached of several national teams and was president of Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA).

Prime Minister Bruce Golding said Jamaica has lost one of our greatest achievers.

Leader of the Opposition Portia Simpson Miller also had high praise for the great Jamaican.

Herb was suffering with kidney complications.

Current president of the JAAA's Howard Aris said Herb made plenty of contributions both on and off the track.

The reactions continue to pour in over the death of the great Jamaican sportsman.

Quarter miler Brandon Simpson, who now runs for Bahrain, spoke about the great Jamaican's contribution to his career.

"His expertise and the way he knew his event, the confidence he had when he came and spoke to us, the love that he had for the upcoming generation for his event was really what helped me to strive for excellence. When I got to the elite level I always thought about the things that he told me," said Simpson.

Simpson was a part of Jamaica's 4 by 400 silver medal team at the 2003 world championships and bronze medal teams in 2001 and 2005.
