Athletes are set to get a share of the largest ever prize pot in track and field history with a total of US $10 million to be awarded for the newly launched World Athletics Ultimate Championship starting in 2026.
The announcement was made by World Athletics on Monday with athletics global governing body saying winners will pocket US $150,000 each.
Comparatively, individual event winners at the World Athletics Championships pocket US $70,000. The launch of the new championship is hot on the heels of World Athletics announcing the historic award of prize money for gold medallists at this summer's Olympic Games.
However, long-standing Technical Leader of Jamaica's track and field team, Maurice Wilson is seeking more clarity on how the monies will be shared. He’s suggesting that all finalists be rewarded.
World Athletics says the innovative event, will debut September 11-13 2026, and is set to be held every two years.
It will first be hosted in the 2023 World Championships city of Budapest in Hungary.
The world governing body says it will take place over three evening sessions, each under three hours in duration, showcasing the best of athletics, including sprints, middle and long-distance races, relays, jumps, and throws.
