Construction industry records drop in output

The local construction industry has registered a drop in output for the second quarter.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) says the industry's GDP fell by 5.2 per cent.

The decline was at a higher percentage than the 4.2 per cent dip estimated by the Planning Institute of Jamaica.

STATIN says the decline was mainly due to less building construction and civil engineering activities in the quarter.

It says the decline in the civil engineering group resulted from reduced expenditure on the South Coast Highway Improvement Project.

There was also a contracting in total sales of construction inputs.
