Two security guards attached to Beryllium were this morning shot by armed thugs while delivering money at the Jamaica National branch at Portmore Pines Plaza in St. Catherine.

One of the guards died on the spot, while the second, a female, was taken to hospital. Her condition is not considered life threatening.

The incident occurred sometime after 8 o'clock.

People who had gathered at the entrance to Jamaica National to collect their PATH payments were forced to take evasive action.

It's reported that the armed robbers grabbed a bag with cash amounting to $10 million and escaped in a waiting white Subaru motor car.

Commander George Overton, Director of Public Relations at Guardsman Group Ltd, said the agency is working closely with law enforcement as they probe the incident.

Noting that it is a "very sad day" for the group, especially Beryllium (formerly Guardsman Armoured), Commander Overton expressed condolences to the family of the murdered security guard as well as "thoughts and prayers" to the wounded worker.

Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, head of the St. Catherine South Police Division, said this morning's heist may have been connected to other high profile robberies over the last few weeks.

According to SSP Phillips, the police suspect that there may have been six men involved in the robbery. The robbers were masked.

He said investigators from other locations are assisting with the probe of this latest incident.
