Justice Bryan Sykes has been sworn in as Chief Justice of Jamaica.

He was sworn in during a ceremony at Kings House Thursday morning.

Mr. Sykes appointment follows weeks of strong criticism from various groups, including the Jamaican Bar Association about Prime Minister Andrew Holness' decision to recommend him to be appointed in an acting position.

Speaking at the swearing in ceremony, Justice Sykes said he will not take his duties lightly.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in the meantime, has reiterated that his administration has no intention to interfere with the judiciary.

Speaking at the swearing ceremony for Justice Sykes, the Prime Minister said he has "the highest respect and regard for the judiciary and the executive I lead has no inclination whatsoever to undermine the independence of the judicial branch or even to trespass anywhere near the discretion of the judges."

"We are interested in a partnership to ensure the efficiency and accountability of the judiciary to the people," he added.

According to Mr. Holness, with the appointment, the Chief Justice is being given a valuable and unique opportunity to transform how justice is delivered.

"It has been opined that efficiency and timeliness must be emphasised within the justice system. The public, in whose interest we all serve, more than ever wants to see an improved justice system through strengthening the rule of law and timely outcomes," he argued.
