Howard Litchmore, Union Officer with UTASP

The management of the St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital is now meeting with the union representing Health Records Clerks in a bid to address their concerns about security arrangements at the facility following an incident on Monday.

The more than 30 unionized workers are continuing to protest on the compound after their colleague was injured during an altercation with visitors to the hospital.

Howard Litchmore, Union Officer with the Union of Technical Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP), said the incident occurred in the hospital's parking lot sometime after 5:00 p.m.

"About five gentlemen in a car entered the parking lot and were about to park in a staff designated parking lot. They were told that they could not park there and the driver ran the car over the foot of Mr. Dixon. Just as he was approach the driver, the four other men exited the vehicle and proceeded to hit him all over with different implements. He received bruises all over his body, in his head, etc.," he told Radio Jamaica News.

Mr. Litchmore said the employee is now on sick leave and has filed a report with the police.

He said the health records clerks are upset that security officers assigned to the hospital did not assist their colleague.

According to Mr. Litchmore, this will be the focus of the meeting with the hospital's management. He said the clerks will be lobbying for a "change in the security or a security procedures so the workers can feel comfortable when they are on the compound that things like this will not reoccur."
