The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) conducted a snap raid on the May Pen Police Station in the central Jamaica parish of Clarendon on Thursday, arresting and charging a policeman for murder and conspiracy to commit murder. At least three firearms and several rounds of ammunition were also reportedly seized.
The raid was conducted in the CIB section.
Statement
In a statement, released to the media on Friday evening, the Commission said it had been tracking the conduct of police officers in Area Three. It confirmed the arrest of the policeman and the seizures.
INDECOM said it had received files from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) "in furtherance of this investigation" and that the cooperation of the JCF was appreciated.
According to INDECOM, the investigation is at a stage "where no further comments can be made."
Hamish Campbell, Deputy Commissioner of INDECOM, had earlier confirmed the raid, in an interview with RJR News. He was cautious then, however, about divulging details on the probe, promising that INDECOM would be issuing the statement, which it subsequently did.
Knight aware of search
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Derrick Knight, Head of the Area Three Police, told RJR News he was aware of the search at the station.
However, ACP Knight said he had not been contacted by INDECOM investigators and therefore could not comment on the matter.
