Jamaica to give US$4M assistance to Venezuela

Venezuela is to receive assistance from Jamaica totaling US$4 million.

This was announced by Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid at Wednesday morning's post-Cabinet press briefing.

The minister said the assistance is primarily to provide medicine, food and fertilizer for the country which has been suffering from exploding inflation and severe food shortages.

The Venezuelan population has turned to violence in desperation, as evidenced in reports of increased food riots and mass looting throughout the country.

Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro visited Jamaica in May to have bilateral talks with the Jamaican Government. His visit came shortly after he sought solidarity from the Caribbean in the midst of calls for a referendum to remove him as president.

Jamaica and Venezuela have enjoyed a close relationship over many years, and are members of regional mechanisms, such as the PetroCaribe and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
