JLP criticises Golding's leadership amid resignation of three PNP councillors

By Halshane Burke

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says the resignation of the three People's National Party councillors in Westmoreland is indicative of the continued decline within that party under the leadership of Mark Golding.

JLP General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang said the party supports the councillors in what he termed their struggle for leadership of unquestioned integrity in the politics of Western Westmoreland.

The councillors - Ian Myles of the Little London Division, Garfield James of the Sheffield Division and Lawton Mckenzie of the Grange Hill Division - tendered their resignation on Monday. They cited their reluctance to work with Ian Hayles as the reason for their resignation from the party.

Mr. Hayles was declared the PNP's caretaker for the Western Westmoreland constituency after being the lone contender for the post in an internal poll.

The Western Westmoreland seat is represented by the JLP's Morland Wilson who defeated Dr. Wykeham McNeil in the last general election.

Reports reaching Radio Jamaica News are that the JLP has approached the three former PNP councillors about the possibility of crossing the floor.
