Principal of Jonathon Grant High School Dr. Oniel Ankle
Principal of Jonathon Grant High School Dr. Oniel Ankle wants his school off the shift system to ensure students can get home early in light of the volatility in Spanish Town and surrounding communities.
Dr. Ankle, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said it would require 22 additional classrooms to have all students at school at once.
He noted that while students are safe on campus, he is worried about their commute to and from school.
With the second shift ending at 5:30 p.m., he said students on that shift face an alarming challenge getting home in the evening, causing him to stop on his own way home and intervene "to get them on the bus."
Expanding the school's physical capacity would allow it to operate a single shift, starting at 8:00 a.m., and finishing at 2:30 in the afternoon would solve that problem, he said.
