New trucks pay off as garbage backlog cleared in several regions

NSWMA Chairman Dennis Chung

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says the recent addition of 50 new trucks to its fleet has allowed it to clear the pile up of garbage across several regions.

The new units were handed over to the authority on November 30 and dispatched ahead of the anticipated busy Christmas season.

NSWMA Chairman Dennis Chung said Western, North Eastern and Southern Parks and Markets are reporting major improvement in the collection of solid waste and now have zero backlog.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Mr. Chung said there has been a redeployment of trucks to supplement those of Metropolitan Parks and Markets (MPM) in the Corporate Area, which still has some backlog.

Mr. Chung is confident that this move will result in "zero backlog in MPM and across the country" by this week.

"As a matter of fact, as of last week Thursday, complaints have fallen by 70%, which is significant - and you're just talking about two weeks since the trucks have come in," he said.

According to Mr. Chung, the agency is ensuring there is at least once-weekly garbage collection to avoid another backlog, particularly at this time of the year when people usually generate more waste.
