Tourism ministers in the Americas, including Jamaica, are collaborating to create a multi-destination partnership as the tourism industry seeks to re-imagine itself to drive growth.
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says he met with the ministers of Panama, Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic on Monday.
He explained that the partnership will see the countries collaborating on marketing, developing strategies to facilitate seamless transfers of visitors, as well as allowing long haul travellers from Europe, Asia and Africa to have the opportunity of staying at "three or four destinations during their vacation."
Mr. Bartlett said the partnership, which he spearheaded, has been in the making for two years.
Cruise shipping
The minister revealed that he is to hold further discussions with leaders of the cruise shipping industry.
He said he will be meeting on Tuesday with the president of Carnival Cruise Line.
As of August 7, Norwegian Cruise Line is to homeport one of its vessels in Montego Bay, St. James.
Mr. Bartlett said among the safety arrangements is for the crew to be fully vaccinated. At the same time, all members of the staff and vacationers, or cruisers, will be tested for COVID-19.
Additionally, the minister said arrangements are to be made for hospitalisation in emergency cases and insurance coverage. Measures will also be put in place to ensure "social distancing in terms of the movement of the cruisers across the various attractions."
Mr. Bartlett was speaking Tuesday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica.
