Seven "major players" in illegal drug trade arrested in St. James

Seven men suspected to be major players in the illegal drug trade were arrested Wednesday during operations led by the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Division (C-TOC) in St. James.

The Narcotics Police say they are members of a St. James-based criminal gang, suspected to be involved in international drug trafficking, which is now the focus of an investigation.

The gang is suspected of using members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to transport narcotics overseas.

Superintendent Jervis Moore, head of the Narcotics Division, told Radio Jamaica News that more operations were conducted on Thursday for other persons allegedly linked to the gang based in Rhyne Park, St. James.

He said a team of investigators has been assembled to begin questioning the men in custody.

A news release Thursday morning from the Jamaica Constabulary Force Corporate Communications Unit said the police/military operations were conducted in Rhyne Park, West Gate, Granville, Mount Salem, Catherine Mount and Flanker.

It said among the suspects detained are members of a major transnational drug trafficking syndicate suspected to be behind the export of large quantities of dangerous drugs to the US and Europe.

Some of the men detained are believed to be connected to the three Jamaican police officers who were arrested last week in the US after they were allegedly held smuggling cocaine.

Electronic devices, cash in foreign and local currencies with a value in excess of J$1.2 million, a BMW X6, as well as a licensed firearm were reportedly seized during Wednesday's operation.
