St. Ann residents question massive jump in electricity bills

Several residents and business owners in St. Ann are in the process of lodging complaints with the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) about the hike in their electricity bills for May.

Councillor for the Lime Hall Division, Dianne Gordon-Bailey, told Radio Jamaica News that residents of Mammee Bay have received bills which have increased by more than 500 per cent.

Mrs Gordon-Bailey theorised that an anti-theft system installed in the area weeks ago may have contributed to the increase in electricity bills.

A resident of Mammee Bay, Annette, says her bill moved from $33,500 in April to more than $226,000 in May.

After speaking with a Jamaica Public Service Company representative, she was informed that she had been receiving estimated bills for two years.

"I said how can I get a estimated bill when you guys are coming to read the metre. No one can throw anything up there, no one stealing the light. So any stealing it must be JPS. It's not my problem," she complained.

Residents of Steer Town, St. Ann's Bay and Brown's Town shared similar experiences.

They have started the process of making complaints to the OUR for a remedy to the situation.
