Taxi associations to decide whether to take action over 15% fare increase

Sophia Campbell, President of the Route Taxi Association of Jamaica and Frederick Bryan, General Secretary of the National Council of Taxi Associations

Taxi associations say they will discuss the 15 per cent increase in fares with their members in coming days to decide whether action should be taken.

The Ministry of Transport has announced that the adjustment will take effect on Monday.

Sophia Campbell, President of the Route Taxi Association of Jamaica, described the increase as a disappointment and a drop in the bucket "that cannot help a sector that has been waiting for a fare increase for eight years now."

"We have a lot of other adversities going against us because, right now, with the COVID constraints, our working hours have cut and everything. So we're finding it very difficult to survive," she explained.

Frederick Bryan, General Secretary of the National Council of Taxi Associations, said his members have been left feeling "betrayed" by the rate of increase.

"In our view, it is insensitive. We are embarrassed. The members are up in arms. We are not seeing where this is coming from," he lamented.
