Judi Dench calls for Netflix to add disclaimer to "The Crown"

British actress Judi Dench has asked streaming service Netflix to add a disclaimer to its royal drama "The Crown."

Her call comes amid recent criticisms of the series' fictionalised storylines.

The 87-year-old said in a letter to The Times today that the award-winning show seems more willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.

She added that her fear is that a significant number of viewers, particularly overseas, may take Netflix's version of history as being wholly true.

Dench said the time has come for Netflix to make changes "for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve its reputation in the eyes of its British subscribers."

Dench's letter follows a statement from former Prime Minister John Major's office, calling the new scene a "barrel load of nonsense".

Dench has portrayed historical queens Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria in Shakespeare in Love and Victoria and Abdul.

Netflix has insisted that "The Crown," which follows the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth over the decades, is a "fictional dramatization" inspired by real events.

Season 5, which portrays the royal family in the 1990s, premieres on November 9.
