Hundreds of persons are expected to get jobs following Thursday’s official re-opening of the West Indies Alumina Company’s (WINDALCO’s) alumina refinery in Ewarton, St. Catherine.
The plant is expected to start up with about 321,000 tonnes of its total capacity of approximately 625,000 tonnes of alumina, this year.
It will employ 629 workers.
This has raised employment hopes at WINDALCO and Alumina Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) plants which have sent home almost 2,000 employees over the past two years.
WINDALCO is majority owned by the world's largest aluminium producer, Russia's UC Rusal, with the Jamaican Government being the minority shareholder.
