Jamaica Producers to restore banana farms in six months

The Jamaica Producers Group plans to restore its banana farms in six months.

This follows an assessment of  the damage to its business following Hurricane Sandy.

Jamaica Producer’s 500-acre banana and tropical produce farm in St.Mary was impacted by the Category One Hurricane.

More than 85 per cent of  the banana crop was destroyed and the company's ripe banana and snack businesses have been temporarily disrupted.

The company says it will take immediate steps to supplement its snack inventory with cassava and sweet potato-based snacks as well as banana chips from its snack processing facility in the Dominican Republic.

Jamaica Producers estimates the direct financial damage to its banana crop to be approximately 50 million or less than one percent of  the book value of  its net assets.
