JBA President Audrey Tugwell Henry and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva

The Jamaica Bankers Association has reacted to the news that Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke will be leaving government to become Deputy Managing Director at the IMF.
JBA President Audrey Tugwell Henry says Dr. Clarke's appointment is a proud moment for Jamaica and the Caribbean.
"Dr. Clarke's work in support of the recovery and strengthening of the Jamaican economy is noted. And I think his appointment is a recognition of the work that he has done," she said.
While admitting that "all of us would have liked to see more work concluded in terms of the strengthening of the economy", Mrs. Tugwell Henry said the country is "well on our way" and a number of the macroeconomic indicators are very strong.
"We've had good recognition from the IMF and other global institutions in terms of the performance of the economy. But I must say that part of what Dr. Clarke did was building in the structure. So, you know, there's never going to be a great time for this kind of a change. The good that will come out of having someone like Dr. Clarke sitting in the third highest role in the IMF far outweigh the negative," she concluded.
In an exclusive interview, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva shared with Radio Jamaica News her expectations of Dr. Clarke's first 90 days in the post.
His first job, she said, will be to acquire knowledge about the 190 member countries "and then to engage with the departments of the IMF to understand how we work so he can lead that work effectively".
Dr. Clarke will also get to speak on behalf of the fund during that time.
