Wigton Windfarm expansion complete

Wigton Windfarm Limited has completed its US$49 million expansion project, which will enable Jamaica to reach 11% renewable energy use by 2012.

The expansion works at the Rode Hill, Manchester farm was funded by the PetroCaribe Fund.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding will officially commission the renovated facility on Wednesday.

The energy generating capacity of the wind farm has increased by 18 mega watts, through the installation of new wind turbines.

This is expected to boost the power generating capacity of the commercial wind farm to 38.7 mega watts, up from 20.7 mega watts.

Wigton Windfarm Limited which is a subsidiary of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica is located on more than 400 hectares of land in Rose Hill, Manchester.

It is Jamaica's first commercial wind farm, the first phase of which was commissioned in 2004.
