IMAX to expand to the Caribbean from Trinidad and Tobago

Imax, the global 3D cinema enterprise with more than 738 theatres in 53 countries, will expand to another Caribbean territory before it builds a second screen in Trinidad & Tobago.

The announcement was made by Ingrid Evelyn Jahra, the chief executive officer of Giant Screen Entertainment Ltd, the exclusively licensed exhibitor-owner of the Imax digital theatre system in the twin island republic.

In an interview with the Business Guardian, Jahra said there is currently no plan for a second Imax screen in Trinidad & Tobago.

Concerning the future of older cinemas, she said, in order to survive, they need to re-engineer their content and/or their infrastructure.

She said some of the older screens are "huge. They are bigger," and conceded that "they do have their space."

Imax is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards created by the Canadian company, Imax Corporation. Imax has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than the conventional film system.

Imax is the most widely used system for special venue film presentation. There are just under 700 Imax theatres in 52 countries.
