A judge on Wednesday set new bail conditions for Buju Banton, but there is no guarantee the international reggae star will be released before his retrial on cocaine conspiracy charges in December.
The new conditions include a US$300,000 bond secured by the Miami-Dade County home of Stephen Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley.
A security company also must put up a separate US$25,000 bond, to keep Buju, whose real name is Mark Myrie, on house arrest at his home in Tamarac, Florida, to fit him with a GPS monitor and install new locks and an alarm system at his house.
Buju would not get the keys or the alarm code.
US Magistrate Judge Anthony Porcelli said Buju might not make bail before the trial because prosecutors plan to appeal the new bail conditions, and an immigration judge still would have to consider a hold on the Jamaican.
Buju, 37, is charged with conspiracy to possess five kilograms of cocaine with the intent to distribute.
His first trial ended in a mistrial in September.
