Yendi Phillips did Jamaica proud Monday night when she walked away with the second place prize in the 59th staging of the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.
She is the first Jamaican to have got so far in the international competition.
Yendi, 24, was selected first runner up to Miss Mexico, Jimena Navarrete.
She had competed against 82 women from across the world.
In a recent interview with Television Jamaica’s Smile Jamaica, the Miss Jamaica Universe 2010 winner said she was elated and felt prepared to do a great job in the pageant.
Yendi was crowned Miss Jamaica world in 2007.
She is the third woman to win both the Miss Jamaica Universe and Miss Jamaica World titles.
Miss Philippines secured the fourth runner up spot while Miss Ukraine and Miss Australia won third and second runners up, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jamaica is already getting more than bragging rights as a result of Yendi's showing.
Jamaica has accepted an offer from the Miss Universe organisers to stage the pageant here next year.
An elated Ed Bartlett, Tourism Minister says his team would have preferred for the event to be held here in 2012 to coincide with the country's 50th anniversary celebrations.
However, he says next year’s competition is what is on the table.
Mr. Bartlett believes that the promotions to be derived from such a venture would be of tremendous benefit to the country.
