Beware of dengue, other mosquito-borne illnesses

Dr. Tamara Henry, Medical Officer for Health in the eastern region

Dr. Tamara Henry, Medical Officer for Health in the eastern region, is advising the public to be on the alert for dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses following periods of rainfall.

Speaking Thursday at the monthly meeting of the St. Mary Municipal Corporation, Dr. Henry said the Health Ministry is expected to intensify fogging in St. Mary, St. Ann and Portland.

"We do not only fog our harvest communities, but we use our indices...to know what we're supposed to do. And when we do get complaints, we try to target our operations. So we continue our surveillance to ensure that we're hitting where we need to hit," she said.

Dr. Henry added that teams have been hosting sessions in schools to sensitise students about how to search and destroy mosquito breeding sites - information health authorities hope the students will bring home and share with their parents.

Householders, business operators and school administrators are all reminded to search for and destroy mosquito breeding sites.

Mosquitoes usually breed in places where water accumulates and becomes stagnant, such as old tyres, bottles, basins, drums or garbage bins. Empty water from these sources and keep them dry.

Securely cover water drums with mesh to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
