The world famous Blue Lagoon attraction in Portland, which has been in a derelict state since 2004, is to be the focus of a day-long sustainable development conference in the parish, Saturday.
The conference hosted by the US-based non-profit organization, N.O.W., will re-evaluate the Blue Lagoon site within the context of its historical and ecological potential and advise on sustainable community development measures in cooperation with the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
Ever since facilities at the Blue Lagoon were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan six years ago, the lagoon famous for its deep blue waters and cold mineral springs has been left to nature and despite a government protection order enacted almost 40 years ago the site has suffered environmental damage due to sheer neglect.
Recently the Jamaica National Heritage Trust stepped onboard to have the Blue Lagoon and its environs officially declared a monument to develop its tourism potential as a world heritage site.
